I have a concern regarding the speech development of my 3 year old. he will say somethings some time but its mostly jibberish to me. At times, he fully understands when i tell him something but does not respond to me with actual words.
Should I be concerned about this? Are other 3 year old able to speak fluently already?
You are all in the head. At 3, your childs speech is only about 50-75% developed in what you can understand and they have about 800 words or so.
Speech therepy? Are you for real...save your money and buy the kids some nice toys instead.

WORRY AS SAME AS YOURS by: Anonymous
MY SON JUST TURN 3 COUPLE WEEKS AGO AND I ALREADY TAKE HIM TO THE SPEECH THERAPY. THEY DID THE TEST AND THEY SAY HE IS OK AND NORMAL AT HIS AGE EVENTHOUGH HE IS LITTLE SHY AND DOESN'T TALK MUCH AT DAYCARE BUT HE CAN UNDERSTAND 2 LANGUAGE BUT HE REFERS ENGLISH AS HIS FIRST LANGUAGE, THE SPEECH THERAPY SAID OK AND FROM NOW UNTIL HE IS 4 AND STILL HAVE SOME CONCERN I CAN COME BACK AND LET THEM DO THE ASSESMENT AGAIN. I THINK I SHOULD GIVE MY SON A LITTLE MORE TIME HOPE HE WILL PICK UP MORE WORDS..
I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TAKE YOUR SON TO THE SPEECH THERAPY AND SEE WHAT THEY SAYS ABOUT YOUR SON..GIVE U A PEACE OF MIND!

I went throught the same thing! by: Heather
Hello Mandy, My son is now 6 years old. I realized that he had a speech problem at about 2 years of age. He went to speech theropy after several testings. He is currently in theropy now even in the 1st grade. I really think you should take your feelings about your child being a little behind and call your insurance or your city to get some tests done. They can provide theropy and the best part is if your child is behind then they usually get everything for free. The government or insurance will cover the cost of any theropy and your child will most likely get to go to preschool as early as possible (my son started at 3) and you will not have to pay a dime. People always say "give your child more time, he is just too young." I wanted to do something about it now. It is better so that in the future it will be easier for them to learn new things. I hope you can take action on this. Hope this helps you see a different light. I am sure glad I did!

Give him a bit more time by: mandy
Though i am not a child development expert myself, i do understand that speech development is often gender biased. Often girls would develop faster in their speech development than boys do.
Although most kids would be able to speak by 3 years, to speak FLUENTLY is a totally different expectation altogether! I suggest you give him/her a bit more time to develop in this area.
To add on, you can try baby signing. I know your kid is not a baby anymore, but baby signing is not just for babies. Its a workable method that i had tried on my 18 month old girl and it did sped her speech development much faster than other kids her age do. This is just my suggestion. i am sure other parents who tried signing with their kids in the early years would agree with me.
