My son has turned 6years old in July. He's doing Grade R. The teacher is not sure if he should go to Grade 1 because she feels he's not emotionally ready, he does not finish his work without help, he can't handle his pencil correctly and mostly he lacks concentration. Now she wants us to decide as parents on whether the child should proceed to Grade 1 or not. According to Educational Specialist, our child is an average child but does have a potential to do better. Occupational, Speech and Auditory Therapy was therefore suggested
The picture that was painted about our boy was different from what we know. We know him as a clever boy who can sing songs from the TV or from Sunday School and also plays well with other kids.
The question would then be:- What would be better? Would it be for the child to repeat Grade R and mature better, taking into account his age. Or would it be to progress him to the next grade but get him all the support he needs.
