Studies show
that how we perceive and process information
would vary from one person to another. In
fact, you can even say that the way you view
the world is dependent on how you perceive
information. Some people, for instance, perceive
information faster and more efficiently using
their visual sense. Other people, on the other
hand, learn information faster if they perceive
this in an abstract manner. This means that
they have the ability to understand something
that cannot be seen faster. Apart from that,
the way we process information would also
greatly affect the way we process anything
that we learn.
|
For instance,
some people process information in a reflective
manner, taking time to think of the lessons to be
learned at a leisurely pace. Others, however, prefer
to process information actively. These different
ways of processing and perceiving information leads
to four learning styles. These are the innovative
learning style, the analytic learning style, the
common sense learning style, and the dynamic learning
style.
Studies
show that a large percentage of children do not
really learn that well using the conventional teaching
method. Thus, it is very important to keep these
learning styles in mind, particularly when it comes
to parents who are practicing Christian homeschooling.
Here are the learning styles in in-depth detail.

Innovative
Learning
Innovative
learners are actually very interested in attaining
personal meaning. This means that innovative
learners need to have established reasons
for their learning endeavors. Ideally, these
reasons would have a strong connection between
new information learned and the student's
personal experiences. This way, it would be
easier to establish a strong connection here,
and further establish just how useful and
applicable the lesson learned is in daily
life.
Instructional
modes deemed effective with innovative learners
include brainstorming, the integration of
content areas, and cooperative learning. At
best, it would be good to combine art class
with writing, as well as social studies with
a little bit of science.

Analytic
Learning
The primary
interest of analytic learners is to acquire as many
facts as possible so that they can further understand
the procedures and concepts that they are currently
dealing with. Analytic learners actually enjoy doing
a lot of research, and they prefer conducting the
independent kind because they sometimes deem company
as a hindrance to their educational prowess. These
learners are very much capable of learning a lot
of concepts and such just from lectures and discussions.
They also enjoy conducting data analysis, as well
as listening to the discussions and lectures of
the people that they deem experts in their field.
Common
Sense Learning
Common
sense learners pay more attention to the logic behind
the concept or application. Basically, they are
out to discover just how things actually work. If
you show a common sense learner a certain gadget
and explain to him its features and capabilities,
he would then focus on how that gadget works - what
makes it tick and virtually how to operate it and
maximize its use. The abilities of common sense
learners are further enhanced if you conduct experiential
learning activities. They enjoy kinesthetic activities
the most - the ones that would allow them to dive
in and get dirty.
Dynamic
Learning
Dynamic
learners are all about self-discovery. They seek
to improve their intuitive abilities and they aim
to learn a lot of things for their own selves, as
well as teach other people vital lessons. Independent
study activities work well for dynamic learners,
such as role-playing games and simulations.
As mentioned
above, Christians should be extremely cautious in
studying the different learning-style theories.
At all times, Christians should exercise care in
absorbing and learning new things and concepts.
What is important here is for Christians to choose
which concepts to absorb and learn - these should
be checked against the Holy Scripture to determine
if the concepts learned are in accordance with God's
will.
According
to the Bible, God gave people different talents
and skills and no matter what learning style you
practice, everything should still be in line with
God's word. The learning styles should not be used
as excuses for whatever shortcomings that Christian
students might experience. Rather, these should
be used to identify the student's strengths and
weaknesses so that the strengths would be enhanced
and areas for improvement would be identified as
well.
Since
people have varying talents and skills, then it
would also follow that a person would prefer more
than one particular learning style. In fact, a Christian
student might be a dynamic learner for now, but
the time might come when he would become a common
sense learner, given the fact that preferences and
needs do change over time. As long as the concept
we are feeding homeschooled Christian students with
are in line with the Scripture, then we are ultimately
practicing Christ's teachings. After all, the Bible
speaks of how all Christians are part of Christ's
own body. No matter how varying the learning style
of your homeschooled child would become over time,
he would still be a huge part of Christ's body.
That is what Christian homeschooling is all about.
