When
the topic home schooling comes up, most people think
that the children should be the main priority and
focus. While this may be true, it is an incomplete
fact. Your kids may be the ones spending long hours
at school but the other part of the equation, the
teaching part, is your responsibility as a mother.
Home
schooling also takes into consideration the role
of the parents, especially the mother. As the de
facto teacher in home schooling, you are responsible
for your kids' education and children's role is
to study and to learn. As a mother, however, you
have a lot more responsibilities on your hand. You
will be responsible for imparting knowledge to your
children. You will also take care of monitoring
their progress. And you will the task of developing
new strategies and technique ares to maximize your
children's education during home schooling.
Becoming
a teacher for your own kids entails a lot of responsibility.
While not all moms can be great teachers, mothers
are innately inclined to assist their children in
the learning process. Children are indefinitely
curious and searching for answers and they usually
turn to their mothers for answers. For this reason
alone, mothers are great candidates for teachers
especially in home schooling. Mothers like you have
an uncanny ability to satisfy the curiosity of their
kids. As your children are growing up, they will
look up to you for guidance. To children, their
parents, especially their mothers, are the most
knowledgeable beings on the planet. Their complete
trust in you is one important reason why you have
to make yourself ready for home schooling.
With
these in mind, there are certain aspects that you
need to assess to determine if you, as a mother,
have the right stuff to also become a teacher for
your children. With your children's future at stake,
it is crucial that you know if you have what it
takes to be both a mom and a teacher. To have an
idea of what you need to be to become a good teacher
to your kids, recall your teachers in school. How
did they affect your life? Were they positive influences
to you? If so, then you need to emulate some of
their personality traits. Experience will always
be the best teacher and you can tap into your previous
experiences to provide your kids with the best home
schooling
1) Are you the messy
type? Just like any school or classroom, you have
to organize everything you need to home school
your children properly. Are you messy when it
comes to filing papers? Do you find time to clean
and organize your workspace? Are you fond of scheduling
family activities and other important events?
Admitting your faults will not make you less of
a mom. If anything, knowing what bad habits you
have can help you become a better person and who
knows, maybe even a better teacher to your children.
2) Do you constantly
arrange and rearrange everything? While being
organized helps a lot in facilitating learning
during home schooling, being too nitpicky and
obsessed with cleanliness and orderliness can
be counter-productive. Having young children in
the house doing art projects will definitely result
in messy tables and lots of clutter. Can you handle
the constant barrage of noise? Are you willing
to give up a spotless kitchen counter for a crayon-ridden
one? If not, then you may want to consider holding
home schooling sessions in a special room. By
keeping a special room for all your children's
school activities, you won't have to deal with
more housework after class is dismissed.
3) Do you get a
lot of rest? No one likes a cranky and grouchy
teacher. Especially not your own kids. If you're
fond of staying up late and sleeping in until
noon, you may want to reconsider your daily habits.
Home schooling is supposed to give your children
the right education from the comfort of your own
home. Teaching your own kids can be a great experience
for you and your children. Being cranky and bad-tempered
will take the fun out of home schooling for your
kids. Remember, in home schooling, your kids will
see you as their mom first, a teacher second.
If you think of them as your students, then you
might forget that they need your support and guidance
as a mother first.
4) What about your
husband? If you have a husband working regular
hours, then home schooling should be a breeze
for you and your kids. However, if your spouse
works during night shifts, then holding classes
for your kids during the day can disrupt his sleep
and rest. As with anything, you have to talk things
over with your spouse before deciding on home
schooling. Home schooling is a collective effort
by the entire family and as such, a great level
of cooperation is crucial for its success.
Teachers
who are degree holders go through many years of
intensive education. Becoming a teacher is not an
overnight activity. Even deciding to become a teacher
for your own children cannot be done overnight.
The right education for your children requires a
combination of knowledge, experience, and a proper
understanding of your children's needs.
As a
mother, however, you have with you something that
cannot be learned in college. Your experience and
bond with your kids can serve as the most important
factors in home schooling. Because you know your
children more than any teacher would, you have the
opportunity to mold your kids into well-educated
individuals. Children learn more about their surroundings
and this world from their mothers. This can be a
crucial aspect in ensuring that your children get
the best form of home schooling that you can provide.
The great
thing about home schooling is that you get to spend
more time bonding with your kids. By becoming your
children's teacher, you can impart your knowledge
along with the knowledge your kids are bound to
get from books and other school activities. Children
trust their parents completely. So, who better to
become their teachers?
