Online homeschooling for a fifth grader

by Lisa Kinter
(Deerfield, Florida)

I homeschooled my fifth grader this year with a combination of textbooks, curriculum, a home teacher/tutor, and some coop classes. One of the most successful parts was a program that I used as supplementary which was entirely web-based (Time4Learning.com). I'm now wondering about using them as my core curriculum for both language arts and math. I have no questions about the quality or thoroughness of it.

My question is about how much time should a fifth grader spend on the computer every day. If I do Time4Learning.com as core, he'll probably be online for an hour a day.

But I'm also thinking of adding an online writing course (Time4Writing.com). That would be another two hours per week.

We would keep doing our own literature course and history courses which I compose with eclectic materials (we read a lot together, discuss it. We study history this way too plus we include many films. I'd probably keep doing a textbook based science. And so on, thoughts?

T4L for Schooling

I think an hour or two is fine for your son. He doesn't have to do all of it in one sitting either. The Time4Writing will be offline writing as much as online learning.

Have you tried their sister site Vocabulary and Spelling City? It is awesome and it's free. You can even print worksheets for handwriting as well as practice your spelling and learn vocabulary in a fun way.

Joyfully,
Jackie

We use http://www.Time4Learning.com for our 3rd grader and We spend about the same amount of time.
We thou school year round so we only do 3 days a week ..Which makes things easier IMO ;)
Anyways ,I wish I had more ideas to add ..
Good Luck!
