My son is not adjusting to me being away and my husband has tried everything. Any suggestions?

I'm a mother of a 7 year old boy and currently away for military training. He has become destructive, throwing away his home work, and being very disrespectful. My husband and MIL have both tried different tactics of punishment/incentives but nothing is working. I'm open to any suggestions please.
