I teach 8 yr olds with moderate-severe autism. We always ask parents to follow through at home with what we do at school. We use "Tell, Show, Do" - tell them what we want them to do, show them how to do it, make sure they do it - sometimes we have to do it hand over hand with them. We try lots of positive reinforcement for desirable behaviors, consistency with redirection of undesirable behaviors, and "First - Then" for ex. First, clean up - Then, you can... Always using positive wording, "I need you to..." "If you sit here, you get... - as opposed to, "If you don't sit here, you won't get... I hope that's helpful.
