Infant
potty training or also known as elimination communication,
basically means training an infant to use the potty.
Medically it is known as Assisted Infant Toilet Training.
To many who have grown up with diapers, such a notion
naturally sounds rather radical if not improbable.
How can
you start on Infant
Potty Training when the infant have no comprehension
on what you are telling them? Ironically, the opposite
is true, infant potty training has been around for
the longest time especially in Asian cultures. Most
parents from our western counterparts have grown up
using diapers, naturally, such a mode of training
using a potty comes at later stage when the child
is able to comprehend simple instructions.
But yet,
it has been proven that Infant Potty Training has
be far more effective compared to potty training at
18 months. This is primarily, the child would have
transitioned from birth using the potty into toddler
using the toilet seat adapter, which is really very
similar to the potty.
Compared
that to a toddler who has been using the diaper since
birth, and suddenly once he/she reaches 18 months
of age, they are told by their parents that they are
now expected to use the toilet. It is only to be expected
that the parents would meet with much frustration.
There are
some basic steps to Infant Potty Training
- First understand
that in the process of infant potty training, you
are really establishing a close communication with
your baby, hence the term Elimination Communication.
You would have to observe for the baby's cues and
recognize them
- When training an
Infant on the potty, there are specific ways to
hold the baby, let them rest on your body in a recline
position while you use both hands to hold on their
thighs over the potty.
- It is important
to note that baby at the age of 1-3 months, you
do not let them rest the weight fully on the potty
because their muscles are not fully develop to take
the body weight
- Keep a consistent
routine and merge it with the baby's daily activities
of living and routine such as sleeping and feeding.
Before and after feeds, after naps or during naps
if it is more than 2 hours.
Within
a period of 2-3 weeks the baby would be use to such
a routine and elimination that they would start to
give you cues on when they need to go
