How to build relationship with my child when i am hardly around?

Recently, i came home one day from a consecutively 3 weeks business trip and was dismayed to know that my 3 year old son did not even look forward to see me. He simply looked away and continued to play his toys.
I know that there are many parents who are like me and who travels a lot due to work commitments. How to build relationship with my child when i am hardy around at home? I don't want to see my relationship with my child suffers as a result of this. I am trapped because i need to work and its very challenging.
Any one can offers me a good solution? I have no intention to look for another job though. And i am also a single parent. My kid, Joe, is staying with his grandparents.
