I have two daughters ages 5 and 7 who have always enjoyed their summers going mostly naked outside. We do now keep this confined to the back yard only, but there are a couple of neighbors who could still see them if they wanted. The girls love this freedom, and it even saves a bit of time when they need to take a quick pee at the back fence (standing up of course, they are such tomboys). The question is when do I need to limit this behavior? When is it really too old to be naked outside even out back?

Lisa, careful with these precious girls. No prying eyes must see them nude. There are evil people around and don't let them be tempted to do harm to these innocents. I am actually surprised that you do not have some shelter to keep anyone from seeing them. Your girls well being is paramount and a little money can prevent trouble. If this is not possible, then get them Shorty pants, they can still absorb the sun but are protected from casual or deliberate viewers. Of course I disagree with the last correspondent, who anonymously says that it's up to the girls to decide how long they can remain naked, that is ridiculous, it's up to no one but the parents to decide on these matters!

I think it is entirely up to your daughters. At somepoint there will come a time when they will either only want to be fully clothed or just go out in their underwear. I think you as the parent should limit how much time they spend outside naked, but never limit naked time. It is freeing for them to be naked and will allow them to respect their bodies some day. Set clear ground rules as they get older. No inappropriate touching outside or their bedroom, but in my humble opinion if they want to come home from 7th or 8th grade and strip down naked or to their underwear, it's their choice. It's their body and they need to feel comfortable.

This will be up to your daughters they will at some point become self conscience about being nude. But is it in the budget to up up a privacy fence. This will make you more comfortable and probably make the neighbors feel a bit more at ease.
