ok. I know this question sounds crazy. But i do not let my kid listen to nursery rhymes at home. He is now coming to 2 years and have not listened to any before. I do find the rhymes repulsive to me and somewhat silly.
Does anyone have the same thoughts as me or am i the only weird one around? Will my child miss out on any 'good stuffs' by not listening to them?

Do kids have to listen to nursery rhymes?
I was just discussing this topic with a colleague, we both teach music at the middle school level. We use beginner piano books, band, strings etc. These books all contain simple songs that in my opinion children should come in knowing. If they know them, then the books are far more effective. Nursery rhymes are by no means silly, they teach our cultural heritage of rhythm and rhyme scheme, and are the basis for the ever increasing complexity of music students will quickly listen to on Ipods, internet, radio, movies, etc.

Nursery rhymes by: Anonymous
I work in a school, usually with primary gr. children. Many of todays children have never heard nursery ryhmes which I find sad. Many of these kids don't know what rhyming means and cannot rhyme words. Rhyming is an important step in learning how to read. For example, word families make it easier for beginning readers to recognize words. For example: mat, sat, pat, rat, bat. As an adult I find nursery rhymes odd but I remember as a small child they took me to a place of magic and imagination.

Children learn the rythm of speech from listening to nursey rhymes. This helps them with reading. It's alsoa fun activity for them and can be for you! They'll soon grow out of it. Eileen UK
