Autistic Children
For parents, nurturing and
rearing an autistic child is such a very difficult experience.
Often, it leaves them with huge frustration and confusion.
However, parents can cope with the challenge of raising
an autistic child by knowing the right ways and through
the support of care groups.
Medical studies show that
1 in every 500 persons in the United States is experiencing
seizures, or simply epilepsy. Persons with this brain-related
disorder are typically deficient of language and social
abilities. Medical studies further reveal that most of
the autistic patients in the country, specifically 80%,
are male. Yet, no definitive reason or study explains
this fact.
The exact cause of this
brain disorder also remains to be a mystery to this day.
Experts suggest that chemical imbalance, medicinal side
effects, child immunizations, and genetic mutations are
potential triggers of the conditions. However, none proves
to be a probable culprit. While experts are yet to find
which is to blame, parents, on the other hand, are constantly
finding fault in themselves. Bad parenting is not a cause
of autism at all. This is a fact that relieves parents
of autistic children today. However, some parents feel
the guilt inside of them, realizing that they are inept
to handle or manage their child's condition. If this bothers
you as a parent, you must know that there are ways for
you to deal with autism.
If you are apprehensive
about your child's education, then you should choose the
school system. The school system is a different approach
in academic training and is perfect for children with
special needs, specifically, children with autism. Teachers
in a school system have exceptional background in educating
special children and they can help in honing their skills.
Children with autism often display extraordinary talents
in mathematics, memory, art, and music. Plenty of institutions
today now include the school system as part their curriculum.
If you cannot afford a private special school, you can
also try special education systems in public schools.
Countries, like the United States, Austria, and New Zealand
have laws that promote equal learning opportunities for
special children.
While most parents regard
medical treatment as a costly, and often an ineffective
option, some parents have found joy and relief in alternative
treatment. Treatment, like the Ketogenic diet and aided
communication, are ways to effectively deal with autism.
These alternative methods have no scientific backup yet.
However, family members observe significant improvement
in their patient's condition. Seek advice from parents
who also have autistic children. Consider the pros and
cons of the treatment methodss and see if you can apply
these to your child. The best advice is still the one
coming from a specialist. Ask professional help and be
open for any suggestions.
More Tips for Parents:
1. List down all of your
child's strange behavior and bring him to a specialist
for a complete diagnosis.
2. Learn more about the
IDEA or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Protect your child from discrimination and unfair treatments.
3. Social and language skills
are problematic in autistic children. Bring your child
to a speech therapy and a segregated program. Better yet,
bring them to an inclusion program. Do not be afraid to
let your child mingle with normal kids.
4. Join organizations that
promote the well-being of autism patients.
5. You must be patient and
considerate with your child. Managing an autistic child's
irrational behavior is big challenge for most families.
Just bear in mind that your child does not intentionally
misbehave. He is merely adjusting to environmental changes.
6. Lastly, never force a
child to do a specific task. Give him space and time to
learn.
