There are so
many symptoms that underlie the condition of
ADHD. But if there is one particular symptom
that you should remember, it is the fact that
the child would find it very difficult to control
how he behaves. This goes without saying that
the kid himself is not really aware of his own
condition.
The good thing
about ADHD, though, is the fact that much is
already known about it, as a neurological condition.
ADHD actually affects the child's brain, particularly
how it processes external stimuli in his environment.
ADHD is a common chronic condition that occurs
during childhood, and since it is chronic in
nature, it can very well continue right into
adulthood.

Children do have difficulty
controlling the way they behave at one point in time
or another. This is pretty normal during childhood.
However, when it comes to ADHD, because of this particular
problem, the child would have encounter problems that
can very well interfere with his schooling. What is
sad about this is that the symptoms can occur in just
about any social setting, from the home front, all
the way to the school and the playground. Interestingly,
you should not associate ADHD with being a developmental
disability. This is quite opposite from what is true
actually, for children with ADHD have been found to
be a lot smarter than other children.
Just as the name suggests,
a child afflicted with ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder, would be very hyperactive and would have
very short attention spans. There are some cases when
the kid would just be hyperactive, but his attention
span would not be short. Other times, the opposite
would occur. Still, there are times when both symptoms
would be present in the child. Now, that is certainly
a handful on any part of the parent. Interestingly,
amongst children who are afflicted with ADHD, it is
actually the boys who are hyperactive, while the girls
are the ones who exhibit more attention-deficit symptoms.
If you suspect ADHD
in your child, you should consult your pediatrician
or a child psychologist right away, so that an accurate
diagnosis would be reached. Do not rely on just a
teacher or a school official to diagnose the condition
for you because they would not have the necessary
training to diagnose such a condition. Furthermore,
do not put off the consultation because early diagnosis
and detection can help the child cope with the symptoms
earlier as well.
As for the treatment
of ADHD, the first step would be medication. When
under stimulant medication, it would be easier to
for the child to calm down. Consequently, the child
would find it easier to focus on his or her tasks
as well. Many parents think stimulant medication can
lead to their children becoming abusive on certain
substances. This is not true at all because these
medications are not addictive at all. Plus, this medication
has been used for so many years now so they are indeed
safe to use. Just be on the lookout for side effects,
which include slower growth and weight loss. Children
can also become moody at times when taking stimulant
medication. Thus, you should get the professional
opinion of child psychologists so that the proper
dosage can be prescribed for your child.
Behavior modification
and therapy make great methods towards the treatment
of ADHD. As parents, you can help your children gain
more focus on their tasks. You can also assist them
in making them feel calmer when they become over stimulated.
There really is no
specific cure for ADHD. However, with proper medication,
parental effort and attention, and therapy, the child
can still grow up to become normal in society.
