When it
comes to our learning abilities, these are unique
as our own personalities may come. Thus, what works
well for you may not necessarily work well for another
person. The same holds true even if this pertains
to your learning abilities as well as those of your
child. In fact, your child may find it very hard to
learn things through "your" way.
Thus,
your child has to develop his own learning style,
and you should do whatever it takes for these learning
abilities to fully develop. The
best that you can do is set up a strong foundation
for your child, and this is something you should do
at an early age.
There
are actually a number of factors that can affect the
learning abilities of your child. All you have to
do is help your child figure out on his own his learning
style. Help him discover how exactly he learns new
things best. Pretty easy, right? Not necessarily.
This is because there will certainly be frustrations
on the road ahead, especially when your child finds
it hard to learn certain things and subjects. As a
parent, you have to be ready to offer him encouragement
every step of the way. You have surely gone through
the school system yourself, so you might have a few
thoughts in mind about how your child can learn things
the best way. You can share these thoughts with your
child, as well as incorporate them into your child's
study habits.
But do
not ever forget that your learning style can be different
from that of your child. Thus, if your style does
not work for your child, it does not necessarily mean
your style's not effective. It just means there's
another learning style that is more effective for
your child. And this is something you have to figure
out as well. The traditional setting for what is accepted
as the appropriate learning environment is at the
study desk. The study desk, in turn, has to be situated
in a silent portion of the house, to foster concentration.
As traditionally accepted as this may be, this setting
does not necessarily work for all children
There
are some children who prefer to lay sprawled on the
floor with their books and materials strewn all over.
Others may prefer to have some music in the background
as well. Now, having music in the background just
might not work for you, but it might have a positive
effect on your child. Thus, you have to be ready to
set up the environment that has your child at his
most productive.
Another
factor to consider pertains to how your child processes
information in his mind. The conventional way here
is for the information to be processed in a structured
manner, from a logical beginning to a logical end.
A lot of students actually find this productive. However,
there are some students who prefer to process information
in meaningful chunks. These chunks are then stored
into memory in a random fashion. Either way, the important
thing here is for the information to be processed
and understood by your child. Thus, as a parent, you
have to observe your child and monitor his study habits,
to determine the methods that work best for him.
Since
your child is still young, then his study habits just
might fluctuate from time to time. This is normal
because your child is still searching for the most
effective method that works for him on his own. You
should also encourage your child to try different
study habits as well, so that the best method can
be determined as soon as possible. As a parent, the
best way for you to help your children learn new things
is to guide them as they discover this for their own
selves.
