7 yr old daughter being bullied,she is now not sleeping through the night.

My 7yr old daughter is being bullied by one of her friends. My daughter is very kind hearted and is a giver.I noticed my daughter writing little friendship cards and wanting to give presents to this bully...Our daughter is no longer sleeping through the night, and says she is afraid of the dark. She has moved in to her big sisters room (14yr old) and now she is waking up the entire house. She is missing school because she can no longer wake up bright and early. I have pointed this out to the teacher, and I am having a meeting with the Principle the end of this week. I too am friendly with the bullies mom and have pointed out on several occasions that her daughter is not very kind to mine. What else can I do..I have told my daughter to tell her to stop and stand up to her but she is afraid they wont be friends...To try and explain to a 7yr old that friends dont treat one another like this..goes on deaf ears.. HELP!!!

I am sorry your whole family is going through this. A few comments: girls are psychological bullies and will go after what they consider either a threat to her "power" within the group or the "weakest" one who will not respond in kind. At this age it would be wise for the bullies Mother to stop her daughters behavior NOW. Your daughter is sweet and searching for ways to deal with the situation, Unfortunately with each note the bully becomes stronger in that she (the bully) feels more powerful. What other friends does your daughter have? Any activities that give her confidence? Does the bullies Mother have some of the same issues in that she must have the attention, may be bossy etc.? Perhaps her older sister can hang around with her a little more having fun. Ultimately your daughter will have to tell her friend to stop. Let us know what happened at the school meeting. I am so sorry that you are going through this. I know how you feel. I have had to tell my son the same thing. What makes it hard is that the bully is often one of the "popular" kids, and so the other kids are afraid to stand up to them. However, once we gave my son permission to defend himself, and put him into a quality Jiu Jitsu program that thoroughly explained the use of force only in the instance of defending oneself, it got better. The question that remains though, is how to deal with the bossiness and verbal bullying. I can only demonstrate kindness in my own actions and insist on it from my sons. Hopefully, their actions will stand out among their friends. It is never okay to take abuse is what I preach to them. I also have an excellend rapport with the principle who is male. He is very good at dealing with bullies as he does not usually call them in formally on the first time. He waits around until he spots them being a bully himself and then addresses the situation and follows up as well. The school has to be committed to ending bullying. I hope that your school and principle are just as dedicated. His method of dealing with the bully eliminates backlash on the children that are the victims, you see? Good luck!
